The next layer of Caribbean tourism is transactional

Destinations have spent years improving how they are discovered. The opportunity now is what happens after the guest arrives: seeing what can be bought on the spot, and buying it.

Caribbean destinations have invested heavily in being found: websites, campaigns, listings and reviews. Once the guest has arrived, though, the experience of buying something often goes back decades. A laminated menu by the pool. A tour sold by word of mouth. A great local restaurant that never reaches the guest at all.

The gap after arrival

The guest is already there, already willing to spend, and often has no simple way to do it. Hotels see the same gap from the other side: demand they could serve, and no channel to serve it in the moment.

From listing to transaction

A transactional layer closes that gap. Instead of telling the guest what exists, it lets them act on it: see what is available in the place they are standing, order or reserve, pay and receive. For the hotel or venue, every zone becomes a point of sale; for local businesses, the hotel becomes a channel.

What it takes to work locally

  • Hotels and venues as anchors. A transactional layer starts where guests already are.
  • Local businesses as supply. Restaurants, guides, drivers and service providers make the offer worth opening.
  • Payments that fit the destination. Currency, cards and settlement have to work for both visitors and local businesses.
  • Operations on the ground. Someone has to onboard businesses and keep the offer accurate.

That last point is why this kind of platform grows destination by destination, with partners who know the hotels, the regulators and the local market.

We are building BarrioX for exactly this layer, starting in the Dominican Republic, and we are open to partners in other destinations across the region.

Most first versions go wrong in the same places: unclear scope, undocumented decisions and progress nobody can see. Here is the method we use to avoid all three.

How a regional partnership works

A platform that works in one country does not automatically work in the next. What a regional partner brings, what we bring, and how a launch is organized.
